An awesome book to check out is Designing Web Usability : The Practice of Simplicity by Jakob Nielsen.

Here is the advice I have always offered my "students":

Common sense will never fail you in the design of your site. Most people can't navigate their own PC, let alone a website. Make your links clearly visible and DO underline them. Users are trained to click on anything underlined. It is even a good idea to keep your links blue in color. Try to use clear navigation terms... I even recommend using terms like "Purchase this item" or "Buy this item" versus "Add to Cart." Foreign users do trickle into your site and you want to offer every opportunity for them to comprehend your page.

Second, remember that not every user has a Pentium 1 gazillion gigahertz with DSL and a 21 inch monitor. Try to imagine your site on a pentium 450 and a 17 inch monitor at 800x600 resolution. Your photos should "entice" users into a purchase. If you are selling a grill and it doesn't look like the mac-daddy of grills in your photos, don't be surprised when no one buys.

My turkey is waiting... I will post more later =)
