Using FTP - 11-18-2004

What features does FTP allow the user to use? I know it I can use it for stats and where visitors are coming from, but what other, perhaps more advanced, features can be used through FTP? Can I use FTP for adding security measures? If so, where would someone like me look for these options and features? Thanks again for the replies.

Hello there, FTP is a program that helps you upload or remove multiple files at once. It's a program that gives you the benefit of not having to upload one page at a time to your server. I don't know about the Security and stats for the Ftp client but it's used for uploading, removing and if you have a download manager downloading files. Hope this helps...

Thanks again Valiant,

As far as the stats I referred to, I simply mean IP address, as well as the site traffic is coming from, if I had a link on other sites. Not too much detailed stat info is available, hits per month, week, yearly etc. See, I am having a problem as well with a subdomain I set up. I hate to say it, but I cant find it anywhere, let alone using it for content. Also, if it is related to this area, what can I do about those pesky little bots, the ones that steal your bandwidth. I cant remember exactly the name of the first I encountered on my last site, however after a search, it was determined that this was not a friendly visitor. I heard somewhere there is a script for defeating this sort of thing.

Stats Related to ips, traffic, web logs of who visited, etc is usully web stats or similar to that, Weblogs are logs that show where your customers are coming from and what keywords they use. Subdomains are usually the form of directory.URL.com, So if you set up a subdomain it should be the name of the directory you made where directory is on the above example. If you have a control panel and do not have anything related to webstats or stats, traffic stats, etc Most likely you might have to get a free webstat program which isn't hard to get. does your server enable Mysql? Anyway send me a private message and let me know what host you are using and I'll see if I can help you more. Also theres usually a feature sometimes in your control panel that allows you to block bots.

Stats and FTP are not related - 11-25-2004

FTP is an anacronym for File Transfer Protocol. The only purpose of FTP is to transfer your files from your computer to a remote computer (your web server). Though there are file permissions within FTP, this typically only comes into play when you are uploading/editing scripts.

Stats software and FTP are unrelated. If you want to do security or deny certain computers, IPs, etc from your site your internet hosting company can assist you.

As far as good stats software, I recommend Urchin or Deep Metrix. Both are relatively easy to use and provide the data most webmasters need. Additionally, there are many third party providers that offer hosted stats solutions. One that comes to mind is WebsideStory aka Hitbox.

Other Stats programs - 11-26-2004

There is also paid programs like Clicktracks (which will require you to download your log files to your local machine) and one of my favorites AWStats. AWstats is free and you will have to install in on your web server.
