Microsoft to buy Yahoo, and I hope it hurts Google - 05-21-2007

It’s been talked about for a while, but this morning on my local business news they made it sound like Microsoft buying Yahoo is a sure thing - and in response, Yahoo’s stocks have shot up 18%.
I realize this is a simplistic view, but I hope it happens because this could possibly give Google some real competition and I’m tired of the whole web mostly depending on one company. It’s not that I’d prefer Microsoft as my overlord - I’d prefer some healthy competition between the giants.
Recently, my feeling of nervousness at Google being such a huge part of my online experience has caused me to search for other online email providers - MSN and Yahoo being the only ones who seem capable of offering even close to 100% of what Gmail does. Maybe I’m strange, but I just hate depending so much on any one service provider.
I’ve also been using Yahoo search a lot because Google’s algo’s gone strange and I’m not finding what I need. Interestingly, most of my sites lost a point of PR yesterday - across the board. My response? I removed my FireFox extension that shows PR. Who cares? They’re still sending me traffic, which is all that I should be monitoring or trying to fix.
I’ll shut up now. If you can’t tell, I’m trying to sound very reasonable here, but the truth is I just feel sort of pissed off when I think about how much control Google has.
