Inserting local images into messages. - 01-20-2007

When I click on the "Insert Image" button that appears at the top while I'm creating a new message, it says "Please enter the URL of your image" followed by a text box with pre-populated "http://"

Does it allow me to enter file:// instead of http:// ,

I think it would be nice if it allowed one to insert/embed an image from their local desktop rather than from the Internet.

I see that the Manage Images button down below allows one to upload an image from their desktop, it would be nice if the "Insert Image" button allowed local images too.

Not an urgent requirement, but just wanted to bring it to your attention.

Hi, Light. I wanted to post here and confirm that your suggestion has been received. We were using an AJAX method that would allow you to insert images in posts and it would silently upload your image in the background for inclusion.

We had two issues:
  1. If you submit the post before the image finishes uploading, you get a broken image. We feel this is fixable through some interface changes.
  2. We noticed a large potential for a deny of service attack. A hacker could institute a number of fake upload requests to the server and a) make the servers so busy that RS eventually goes offline and b) filling up the server storage drives (highly unlikely but still possible).
I know that our present method of including images is somewhat of an inconvenience. Please know that we're looking at technologies that are fully compatible with the browser tags in our logs, and that somewhat limits the field of possibilities (for now).

Keep the suggestions coming. All of them are logged and we have a schedule where we revisit all suggestions to see if they can be implemented.

Thanks for following up.

I agree that it is a big security threat to open up a site for any file upload.

One suggestion, (you probably know this already) I could offer is implementing a CAPTCHA on "Insert Image" and even "Manage Images", to prevent bots from auto uploading images.

I've also heard (but don't know how true it is) that one can disguise viruses in images, but most computers today are equipped with anti-virus software so should there be such images, I guess the anti-virus would prevent a computer from harm, as long as the anti-virus updates are synchronized ofcourse.

Nice. When do you use the image insert though? Would you suggest using it more often than not?
