BuyCostumes.com - 11-09-2004

I recently promoted this program (pre-Halloween) with Google Adwords and it taught me a few things that other people might want to know.

First, keeping on top of current search trends is a great way to make money. Seasonal keywords seem to be much less expensive than most, even when they're very popular. My ads got over 500 clicks in a little less than 3 days in the middle of October and I was paying very little for them.

Second, unless you're selling something very expensive yet very popular, 6% is not enough commission to work with Adwords. Even though I sold several hundered dollars worth of costumes through my ads, I still didn't make enough to cover the cost of all those clicks (even though they were cheap). If I had been getting 8%-10% I think I migh have broken even. With 13%-15% I wouldn't have stopped my campaign when I did.

So be careful. I've decided that a fixed payment per order or lead is safer than a percentage, at least when you're selling with Adwords. If I had a Halloween site things might have been different.

So that's my 2 cents, hope you like them.

Jason:
I agree with you on this one. Seasonal offers always work well for me via PPCs. I stay away from the main PPCs like Google and Overture because is too many affiliates competing for the same click. You might want to try experimenting with the bottom feeders like Kanoodle, FindWhat, etc.

Thanks for the tip. There certainly is a lot of affiliate competion on Google. I've considered some of those lesser known PPCs but never actually tried any. Maybe I will now that I've heard someone actually support the idea.
