Optimizing Your Website for MSN - 02-20-2007

Optimizing for MSN has been one of the most intimidating factors for most SEO experts around the world. The main reason is that the whole planet is busy researching on and implementing in effective optimization for Google search engine.

Very less has been said, researched, discussed and written on optimization mechanism for MSN. Many wonder about the factors MSN search considers or given weight-edge to determine relevance.

Some of the conclusions in this regard have displayed that MSN gives preference the on-page content. As per the endorsements made by the MSN search blog, it is concluded that the text of links that point to a page is what actually determines relevance.

Another blog entry made by MSN search program manager Eytan Seidman, elaborated this point further and came to a conclusion that URLs that possess many query parameters, have a very low chance of ever being crawled. In case MSN has to traverse through eight pages on your website prior to finding leaf pages, MSN Bot may prefer not to go far. Hence, it is advisable to use or create a sitemap.

As per the SEOChat moderator, Dazzlindonna, optimizing of MSN is not all about Meta tags, content or links. MSN optimization involves a number of other important factors.

Optimizing for MSN is different. The MSN search-ranking algorithm scrutinizes factors including the quality of websites, page contents and number of websites that offer links to your webpages. It is all about the relevance of your website’s content to the keywords. MSN basically deals with the relevancy that is important to most of the other famous search engines.

One of the recent researches in to MSN makes it clear that the on-page content is more important in case of MSN as it is for Google.

Giving emphasis on keywords for your website content would obviously help as it would, in case of other search engines, but you must not overdo it. Populating your website content would certainly damage the page ranking. Pages that are identified as purposely stuffed with keywords to promote certain keywords are punished severely. These webpages are considered as spams by the search engines.

MSN is adept in identifying unscrupulous SEO practices. Follow the given tips to get yourself banned from their index.

Stuff ALT tags that users are unable to view.

Use hidden text or links.

Use link farms to increase the number of links to your page.

Re: Optimizing Your Website for MSN - 02-22-2007

With the launch of MSN’s new search it is time to think yet again about the optimization of your Web site. Most of the time when you mention search engine optimization, a lot of folks roll their eyes and look the other way. I promise, though, it does not have to be that painful. The true key to optimization is to mind your manners.

Some questions have come up though about how the new MSN search will index Web site pages. Thanks to Google, we are all now paranoid about where we come up in certain search results and how we can improve our rankings.

Anticipating this reaction, MSN Search did what most major search engines do: feature a number of help pages designed to assist site owners in these matters. MSN’s Site Owner Help pages have also stimulated an interesting conversation on WebProWorld. The point of contention was whether or not MSN Search encouraged W3C validation.

Although their help pages did say validated HTML was required, they did say “Use only well-formed HTML code in your pages. Ensure that all tags are closed, and that all links function properly. If your site contains broken links, MSNBot may not be able to index your site effectively, and people may not be able to reach all of your pages.” Therefore, validated HTML will not hurt, and may actually help your ranking in MSN Search. This is also true with most, if not all, search engines.
