AdSense Gains Ad Placement, Other Features - 01-26-2007

Google AdSense appears to be eyeing a few new features, and - if you're lucky - you may be able to take a look at them, too. An "Ad Placement" tab has become available to all users, while "My Publishers" and "Message Inbox" are still in a limited release phase of testing.

Search Engine Watch's Frank Watson relayed a message from the Inside AdSense Team, but the team only discussed the new "placement" feature. "As you may know, custom channels are a great way to track the performance of individual ad units on your pages," the team wrote. "Starting this week, with just a few extra steps you can make your site more attractive to advertisers by allowing them to target these channels as ad placements."

The team's members go on to compare Ad Placement to an "enhanced" version of custom channels. They also provide about another 500 words' worth of explanation, but those comments catch the gist of the idea (and you can read the rest of the message here if you're interested).

Barry Schwartz explained the two other new features. The My Publishers section, according to Schwartz, "allows you to search for your publishers by email, company name, contact name, client ID, association date and country." And better still - "[t]his may be a sign that Google is making it easier for AdSense consultants to offer services to publishers."

The last addition (the Message Inbox) "is basically a way for Google to send you emails through the AdSense console," as Schwartz describes it. Users probably shouldn't expect to see anything too exciting, though, as "the first message I received was an optimization report." And what insightful advice did the message offer? "Placing more than one ad unit on a page generates often generates more revenue."

Still, there seems to be a general consensus that these changes all represent steps in the right direction. Now it's just a waiting game to see if and when Google grants the features a wider release.
