Yahoo Gives $1 Million To Georgetown University - 04-14-2007

Yahoo is giving $1 million to Georgetown University to study the relationship between international values and Internet communications technologies. The fund will be known as the Yahoo International Values, Communications, Technology, and Global Internet Fellowship Fund.

"We appreciate Yahoo!'s generosity and look forward to entering a partnership that enables us to enhance our ability to address critical global issues and support research and scholarship that will inform business leaders, policymakers and others," said Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia.

Yahoo has been under fire for handing over information to the Chinese government that caused a journalist to be jailed for 10 years. The company has been working with Google, Microsoft, along with human rights organizations, investors and legal experts to hammer out a code of conduct to protect online free speech and privacy.

Georgetown's Yahoo Fellow in Residence and Junior Yahoo Fellows will begin their work in the fall of 2007. They will examine the use of communication technologies and how regulation of the Internet affects privacy and freedom of expression issues internationally.

The fellowship fund will focus their efforts on countries that are growing quickly in the marketplace such as China, India, Russia and Brazil. Besides doing research, Yahoo Fellows will work with faculty to enhance curricular activities such as contributing to guest lectures, seminars and case studies.

"This gift complements our efforts in the School of Foreign Service to connect scholars and practitioners, and to share knowledge about critical issues in international affairs," said Robert L. Gallucci, dean of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.

"The Yahoo! Fellows will continue to build upon our efforts to address the most pressing topics facing the global community."
