Smile Hello from an American living in Thailand - 01-25-2007

Hello to all!

Just joined this forum. I'm an affiliate manager working with the OPM firm AMWSO. Most of the guys at my firm are British living in Thailand, but I'm the lone token American working here ;)

Really looking forward to try and actively participate and contribute to the community here. And for anyone who's looking for some great affiliate programs to join, please take a look at our site and our programs.

Dave

Hello Dave,

Welcome to Revenue Source. It's good to see that you finally decided to come hang out on the "cool kids" board. lol

I have a buddy of mine who's wife is Thai. They met when he was vacationing there. She's near 30, but looks 16-17 years old. They were in Victoria Secret and he mentioned he was buying for his wife. When the woman asked her size, he replied (without thinking), "Do you have anything in kids' sizes?" Let's just say it became quite the incident. I think he's banned from VS now. lol

She was walking around the other day with a lollipop. I looked a little closer and it had a grasshopper in the center! Gag* She also loves these shrimp chips she's always carrying around.

I'm sure Thailand can be quite the culture shock for Americans.

Hi, thanks a lot of the welcome Tom. Funny story about your friend buying in VS.

I have seen those grasshopper lollipops! "Street food" is a big thing in Bangkok, you can buy all kinds of great food from street vendors for a dollar or so. Some of those vendors have "bug carts" with a pretty large selection of different bugs that some Thai folks find delicious. I'm told the grasshoppers and some particular worm/grub are quite delicious. I hope never to find out firsthand ;)

It's a pretty amazing country....you have that situation like the bug cart that can be quite a culture shock to many folks...but then again they have huge mega shopping malls here that when I'm walking around sometimes, I even forget that I'm not in the USA.

Are there other areas you've had a hard time adapting -- like odd laws? I'm not sure if it's Thailand, but in one of the nearby countries it's illegal to chew gum in public.

I haven't had the opportunity to visit Thailand yet. It's one of the locations on my "list."

Re: Hello from an American living in Thailand - 01-27-2007

Well, the Thais are pretty sensitive about their King, and he is quite highly revered throughout the country. If one insulted him or said anything negative about him in public, that would put one in a definite jam, both with the law and with any Thais that were standing around and heard it.

Otherwise, it's very very laid back here.....live and let live. The chewing gum law comes from Singapore, which is not to far away :) I would definitely encourage you to come visit if you have the opportunity. Thailand really does have a LOT to offer....great shopping, fun nightlife, awesome beaches, incredible food, and it's all fairly inexpensive relatively speaking.

Hi Fwahmi,

Yeah, it'd be great to get in touch with Holly. It's always good to make new contacts in our business.

I would not say the internet connection is completely back to normal yet. However, much improved since the first week of that earthquake that knocked out all those fiber cables around Taiwan.
