Keyword tools useless for long tail? - 01-27-2007
I have just read somewhere that all Keyword tools, even Wordtracker are useles for long tail keyword research.
He wrote that he finds the most valuable data in his own logfile for his niche website, and that it's totally different from what comes from the keyword tools.

Can anyone confirm that?

I hope I am not breaking rules posting my own link. I wrote an article about it here: Longtail Keyword Research for Seo

I didn't get into as much as I wanted and the keyword I provided isn't the best long-tail example as you said long-tail keywords generally don't show up on the traditional tools however the mylongtail tool I show in the post works great for this. I use it all the time.

We use a site called HitTail - Free Long Tail Search Tool for keyword discovery. They offer suggestions on Long Tail keywords for your site after about a week of data collection.

Yeah also called mylongtail. Interesting tool to use. I still use Keyword researching although I know a good many seo pros don't for some reason. I find it very valuable.

Yes they are pretty much uselss for most longtail keywords - they couldn't possibly list every single combination of phrases.
You need to generate a large number of phrases using a tool like KeywordCombo at KeywordCombo - Keyword List Builder - Keyword Combo

I agree. That is one reason I am an seo today. So many kind people who were willing to offer good info for free. And because of all the free info I have gotten over the years I am now giving it back and also new research I have done. It is my way of saying thank you!

Hi, this is Mike Levin of HitTail. Let me know if I can answer any questions about the tool. One of the things that appears to have escaped this discussion is that the objective is often to use exactly the right longtail phrases, so you don't over-write and fill your site with crap, and so you don't target excessively competitive terms. There's a sweet spot in the middle, which if you target, you can generate a lot more traffic with the least amount of effort.
