If you link to a direct competitor, you could end up losing some of your potential customers to your competition.

That is a scenario that can happen. But quality of the content would still have a final say.

I think all backward links are worth it, but best to start with relevent pages and work down from there. I do alot of forum and blog posting also directory submissions, this can work well it really just depends on your industry and how relevent the forums and blogs are to this abit.

Those are the most basic ways to build backlinks. I am also employing those methods even if you would hear a lot of fuzz on other forums saying they are weak links. But basing on my experience with our sites, they really help.

I never use any automatic tools. It takes a lot of time, but I visit sites and make submissions and commenting, etc all manually.
