My advice is to start with official documentation - try the "Webmaster's Section" at Google, check google blogs to get the latest and most relevant information.

There are many Affiliate Networks out there I happen to work at what I think is the best one around.

What we and others do is to help you as a newbie to navigate the world of Affiliate Marketing. From what campaigns to run to how to best utilize them to cheering you up on a down day, we are here to help in any way we can. And believe me at least here at CPA Empire we go to any length to get help our affiliates to make money as easily as possible.

You can succeed in internet marketing if you have the time and effort to put into it
However you should not think it is easy or that you will quickly become filthy rich!! - most people who "have a go" never make a single sale - so beware of the pitfalls

A couple of pointers I would mention to get you started is:

Pointer One
Always remember whatever marketing method you choose - and I recommend you try several - there will be plenty of people that will tell you "this doesnt work or that doesnt work" - the key to success online is to remember "its not what you do but how you do it thats important" - so try and find your own "niche ways" to use the marketing vehicle in question

Remember most people are not succeeding so dont just follow the crowd - otherwise you will just repeat their mistakes, try instead and do things that you find work for you

The second pointer is always hide your affiliate code.

There is nothing more guaranteed to waste your precious time that plastering your bare affiliate code all over the place - no one will ever click it and no sales will result. Always use a method of hiding your affiliate code so that you have a short link to ad at the end of an article

The third pointer is learn ad copy

There is a huge difference in your click through rates depending on the title and the wording of your ads
Some words are like buttons to press - they will always get a response - other words might look good to you, but no one ever clicks on them
So be careful how you actually word your ads and articles etc
