Do you know what the Internet really is about? - 05-16-2007

The internet is a big place… Many people go about their daily lives on it. From people posting on blogs and forums, to getting your day-to-day business done, millions of people are working online for many reasons.
The truth of the Internet is clouded for many. They are unable to really see what the landscape really is. Some think it’s a free habitat to do what one likes, while others think it’s a great resource to find all the information or money they ever dreamed about.
The fact is, the internet is a business. From the minute you got that high speed connection or dialup connection you have paid to use this platform that is nothing anything short of a money making machine.
From internet service providers, to the very people that shoot them million dollar satellites into outer space to get the data from this website to your PC, it’s all about business.
Even if a website has no paid services, they may pickup the tab with ads, paid reviews, or even reselling data (emails, users search patterns or all those free quizzes you see).
Everything has a point at the time it was develop, and while some may have drifted away from the point that they had in mind at the time, they are still footing the bill for others to use it, even if they are not making any money from it.
While Google and other search engines are sporting endless free tools, these tools are developed to attract you to their services, in the hopes that you will make them money by providing them with data, ad clicks, or even paying for advertising yourself.
Even Wikipedia has plans to make money at some point; otherwise no one would ever invest the millions it is taking to run it each year.
So the next time you see a website, remember whoever built it had a plan, and it may include you… To think otherwise is only naive!
You may be thinking, what is the point of this post, or you may have already seen it. But if you have not, just remember everything you see or touch in this world has been paid for by someone and they have plans for it, and if you can see it, you may have that million dollar deal that you have been scrounging around SEO land for.
Happy hunting, and remember to think outside the box. The best ideas are the ideas that you have not already had!

According to Vinton Cerf, chief Internet evangelist for Google and one of the Internet's founding fathers "The Internet has become too pervasive and too significant on many dimensions to imagine it is still the onetime academic thing it once was,"
The internet is in major use everywhere and one gets an easy access to most of the major online services and tons of small startup "on-ramps," by dialling in with modem. But the internet is not another online service or even an extension of one, so people aren't getting the full picture. How does the net go beyond being just a big online service?
The online service industry is also pretty old, and dates back to the first BBSs and online services in the late '70s. That world pretty much ignored the networking world of the ARPANET, USENET and the internet until 1992. It was academic and uncontrolled, it was competition and it was perceived as being free. It wasn't free, somebody else was paying for it, but it was actually remarkably cheap per user in terms of what it delivered. Particularly since those online services worked at 2400 bps or even less. The internet is of course very simple. All it really does is provide point to point communications for computers on top of a packet switched network. What people see, though, is the applications that people have put on top of this. The thing that makes the internet different is that it provides permanent virtual connectivity. It gives you the illusion that something far away is on the computer that's on your desk. Because the connection is (when done properly) permanent the wall between "on your computer" and "on somebody else's computer" breaks down. In many cases the connectivity doesn't have to be fast, but for many of the exciting cases it is.Indeed, permanent connectivity isn't everything. A lot of interesting things happen with plain old modems and BBSs and USENET. But the internet can do all those things as well or better, and it can do more.
