At PubCon Matt Cutts from Google did a little show and tell session where webmasters could shout out a domain name and he would point out some of the things that were wrong with it.
Some webmaster in the group asked Matt about a domain, and in the matter of seconds Matt was telling the webmaster that he had 50 domains (Ill be talking about Google and Whois data in my next article) and that most where parked domains with ads on them.
Most webmasters looked at this funny as with most things more is better. Truthfully most webmasters really believe in churning out hundreds of domains a year to cut a buck. However as Matt somewhat pointed out, it is not really that good of a thing for Google and as I’m about to tell you it is not that great of an idea for you either.
In Google’s eyes if you are putting out to many domains (services) a year, then you must not be contributing quality content to the search engines or the internet in that case. From this we can easily conclude that producing to many domains or services could affect your ranking, or your income.
I can tell you right now, lots of domains can not even compare to one quality website!
My business focuses on producing produces that users will love. This blog and other services like Wordze are build out of something I enjoy to do, and with that I put much time into writing quality articles or services that will have some meaning to it, and wont be trying to sell you a load of crap, or keep the real info out of your hands.
This idea is applied to my entire internet business. If I do the best I can, and put my best foot forward I will produce websites that will naturally find success on the internet and in the SERP’s of search engines like Google.
Before I can go on, I do want to point out that this does not stop me from buying domain names that I think are great or are attached to a great idea that I have for the future. Hell I have domains that I have been hanging onto for more then 6 years that I have never build and they do give a server not found notice if you try to visit them.
As there is nothing wrong with being an idealist with your business, you can hoard as many domains as you would like as long as your not trying to publish them for whatever reason you have in mind, be it the sandbox, or other ideas.
In the end if you really stop and think about how much time you are spending on all the domains that you have, and how much time you spend putting out more domains you will see how much energy you put into just creating new services, when you could have spent that time getting the websites that already make good money to make you even more!
