Like any webmaster I sometimes bite off more then I can chew which then turns into a down hill spiral.
In the last 4 months I have somehow turned my 3-5 item list into a two page list of what I need to do now. Because of this I have no way of finishing any of them on time as most of them are already behind.
However I don’t need to worry, as I have my good old playbook that I fall back on when I get into problems like this one.
If you are one of them webmasters that are finding yourself under a heavy load of work that must get done now before you will be able to get any revenue, then my playbook section on getting the job done should help you get back on track.
Some simple steps to getting the job done!
When you are under heavy load and see no light at the end of the rabbit hole to getting the job done, then these simple steps could save you from never getting anywhere.
Open your favorite text editor and start listings the items you need to get done. If you have more then one site, group the items under the website name.
Once you have compiled your list of things to do, put them in order of most important to least important.
From here look at each item and realistically estimate how long it will take to get the job done, and make an entry beside the item with the time frame expectancy.
Once you have completed organizing your list it is time to put an expected finish date after the item or website group.
Example:
My get back on track list:
FirstExampleSite: December 7th 2006
Build header -3 hour
Build website template -3 hour
Write content -1 week
Publish to internet and get fist links - 5 days
NextExampleSite: December 19th 2006
Write new code for poll system -1 day
Write 5 new articles - 3 days
Hunt for more links - 1 hour a day 3 days a week -
All projects will be done by the 24th of December 2006.
Once you have completed your list and set a start date for the first item. You will want to print out your get back on track list and hand it out to anyone that helps you with the building of your websites as well as post it by your PC so you can see it at all times while working.
When the start date arrives, look at your list and start working on the first project. Once that project is done move on to the next project. Keep this up till you are done and on track.
With anything if you do to much of it you get sick of doing it and will not complete it.
This is where you have to take timeouts. Because of this I recommend that you not work on weekends as you will need a break and will be able to come back on Monday and get back to business.
If you follow the time lines and plans that you have written out you will complete the projects that you wanted to do on time, if not before your planned finish date.
